This is a low profile item where the combined heights of the scroll and base are minimized for a streamlined effect. Characteristic of the later Roman style, the scrolls protrude at an angle to the corners in a splayed effect, being both more adept to carry heavier weights of an entablature whilst giving a lightness of feeling to the overhead architecture. The base for insertion of the column top is recessed above the level of the base line.
